Power quality is a growing concern
Power quality is already one of the main concerns for electrical systems and PQ analyzers should be included by default in your panels / auditing services.
From one side, we have today a higher equipment sensitivity and from the other side the same modern equipment is a source of PQ problems. As a result they fail more often.
End users are much more aware of the impact poor power quality can have in terms of downtime and equipment damage.
Every electrical network and its problems with Power Quality are unique and need:
- planning of the measurement campaign,
- preparing the site,
- measuring activity,
- and finally understanding where the problem is.
Measurement of power quality requires the use of proper instrumentation to suit the application.
Retroactive vs Proactive approach
When dealing with PQ problems there are two main approaches: permanent vs temporary monitoring systems.
One of the main limits of the temporary power quality monitoring systems is that you are not able to detect short-term, non periodic PQ events (sags , swells, interruptions, etc.) should these events happen outside of the usual two week measurement period.
It is also a retroactive approach where measurements are made after the customer complaints or problems have already impacted your system.
Not being able to identify all the PQ events and acting after damages occur means that you fail to provide a continuous improvement solution.
A permanent power quality monitoring system instead detects and records all the power quality disturbances continuously. Even the shortest PQ event is registered and can be analyzed.
In addition, it is possible to monitor in real-time your systems PQ performance during critical periods or special operations.
This is a proactive approach preventing poor PQ performance and issues in your system.
Installing permanent PQ monitoring devices in your panels, in different locations of your building, allow you to identify exactly the area where to make improvements and avoid downtimes before those are impacting your production lines or the building tenants.
